I love Nutella

Light. Chocolatey. Delicious.

Its kind of horrible that so far on this blog I only have ONE recipe that uses Nutella.  Those were the crepes I made back in the summer.  Those are good.  But these.  OH. MY. GOD.

So simple.  Three ingredients, plus things for an egg wash.  All of which, if you are like me, are sitting in my house at any given time.  A wonderful dessert or afternoon tea snack that is so simple and quick to make (the longest part is the baking!) that you might start making them daily.

This baby might make me start doing that.

These Nutella-mallow turnovers (or pockets if you prefer) are simple: Nutella, marshmallows, and puff pastry, all brushed with an egg wash.  Now, the recipe I saw called for mini marshmallows.  Good luck finding halal or kosher mini marshmallows.  For some reason they don't seem to exist in the world.  So all I own are the large ones.

Powdered sugar dresses every dessert up.

But not to worry!  If you own some kitchen shears, just dip those in powdered sugar and then cut the large marshmallows into smaller pieces.  They do not have to be perfect.  This method also works to make big marshmallows appropriate for hot cocoa.  Which I may have to have along with one of these turnovers later on today...  And if the marshmallows keep sticking to the shears (or knife if that is what you got), then dip the marshmallows themselves in powdered sugar between cuts to dry out the raw edges.

about one large marshmallow cut up with be enough for each pocket

Each recipe makes 8 turnovers.  Try to make those last.  I ate about three in one sitting.  But I am eating for two, so that is okay, right? ;)

Look at the nutella mallow filling trying to escape. The only escape is into my belly!

Lets get baking!

Nutella-Mallow Turnovers

Ingredients:

  • 1 package puff pastry dough (find it in the freezer aisle near pie)
  • 1 cup Nutella
  • 1 cup mini (or cut up large) marshmallows
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • powdered sugar
Directions:

Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.

Thaw out puff pastry dough until pliable.  Cut the each square of dough (you get two in a package) into four equal squares.  You might need to trim the edges a little to make the squares neater.

Spread a few tablespoons of nutella onto the center of each square, leaving a quarter inch all around.  If the nutella is not spreading well, put it in the microwave for a few seconds to loosen it up.  Then put about 12-15 marshmallows on top.

so simple.  This is really about 75% of the steps to the recipe shown here.

Fold over the pastry to form a triangle.  Crimp the edges around with a fork, sealing firmly.

Mix the egg with 1 tablespoon water.  Brush this over the tops of the pastries.  Sprinkle with some granulated sugar for crunch.

Bake in oven for 22-25 minutes, or until pastry is golden.  Allow to cool for 5 minutes then dust with powdered sugar.  Enjoy!

stop drooling and start making your own.  And... you are welcome.

Here is a sidenote: These turnovers are AWESOME at room temperature the next day.  I just had one with my lunch and wish I had another to eat.

On another sidenote: I wish Pepperidge Farm (the only company I have seen that makes puff pastry dough that you can buy) would seal each sheet of pastry individually in the package.  I have had to throw out a lot of pastry dough in my lifetime because I only needed on sheet and the other sheet sat in the freezer and got gross.  Just a thought folks.

    1. Do try! These are possibly my favorite thing I have made on this blog as of yet. And SO SO SO easy. Any recipe where the egg wash is the most complicated step is always good with me! Happy baking!
